I think one important, but rather deemphasized aspect of leadership, is the art of listening. We talk too much and think too much about what we're going to say instead of really listening to others. We may be hearing people with our ears but not really listening to them with our hearts. Here's a list of four ways to become a better listener and leader by Rick Warren.
- Withhold judgment and criticism from the start
- Keep calm
- Be an active listener
- Paraphrase and summarize
You may not agree with everything Rick Warren says, but do yourself a favor and "listen" to the rest of what he has to say on this issue. Like he says, "If you want to be effective in ministry, you've got to be a good listener."
