Humility is a journey and I am moving slowly. But along the way I've been greatly helped by the humble words of men such as Charles Spurgeon, Martyn Lloyd-Jones, and John Stott. All of them agree that the one thing that crushes pride and cultivates humility is looking at the cross.
May the Lord bring us in contemplation to Calvary, then our position will no longer be that of the pompous man of pride, but we shall take the humble place of one who loves much because much has been forgiven him. Pride cannot live beneath the cross. Let us sit there and learn our lesson, and then rise and carry it into practice. ~ Charles Spurgeon
There is only one thing I know that crushes me to the ground and humiliates me to the dust and that is to look at the Son of God and especially to contemplate the cross. ~ Martyn Lloyd-Jones
Nothing in history or in the universe cuts us down to size like the cross. All of us have inflated views of ourselves, especially in self-righteousness, until we have visited a place called Calvary. It is at the foot of the cross that we shrink to our true size. ~ John Stott
