10 Commandments Graphics-05.jpg

Hey Oak Hill,

Last week, we looked at the 1st Commandment—"You shall have no other gods before me." At first glance, the 2nd Commandment is quite similar—"You shall not make for yourself a carved image…you shall not bow down to them or serve them.” Is this command saying the same thing? Some Christian traditions do emphasize the similarity in these two lines, and consider this all to be the 1st Commandment.

While these two lines are certainly related to one another, there is good reason to separate them as two commands. Where the first command calls us not to worship false gods, this second command calls us not to worship the true god in a false way. You see, God knew that his people would be tempted to look to other sources for help, comfort, and satisfaction, but he also knew that they would be tempted to redefine him, to attempt to make him into something he’s not. In fact, just a few chapters later in Exodus 32, Israel would do just that by making and bowing down to a golden calf, calling it the god who brought them out of Egypt.

We may not be tempted to worship a statue of a bull. But haven’t we all felt more comfortable with some of God’s attributes and downplayed or even denied some of the rest? Brothers and sisters, God is real, and he has revealed himself to us as he really is. It will not do for us to change him and try to fit him into a package better suited to our own preferences and desires. He’s too big, he’s too good, and he’s too glorious. So let’s love, obey, and rest in him.

I’ll see you this Sunday,

Pastor Josh

Exodus 20:1-2, 4-6

20 And God spoke all these words, saying,

2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing steadfast love to thousandsof those who love me and keep my commandments.

This week we are singing about the worthiness of God and all the reasons we have to worship Him and Him only.
