Yesterday I got the call that one of our church members was in a serious car accident. It was a one-car accident and she hit a tree. She was removed from the car and flown to the University of Louisville Hospital. By God's grace she is alive today, sustaining what looks to be only minor injuries. Yesterday, in the afternoon, I was able to see both her and her husband in the hospital. It brought tears to my eyes as I saw her face. And yet it brought joy to my heart as I pondered God's hand on her life. It is sheer grace that she is alive today. Sheer grace. Come to think of it, it’s sheer grace that all of us are alive today. Every breath is a gift from our gracious God. Our lives belong to Him.
God has used this car accident to once again remind me what life is about. In Philippians 1:20-21, Paul says:
It is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death.
We only have one life. Paul's passion was that his life would count for Christ, that Jesus would be honored in his life and in his death. In light of these verses, John Piper gives the following exhortation:
- Life and death are given to us as means of displaying the supreme value of Christ.
- The supreme value of Christ is displayed when you treasure him above all earthly things and all other earthly persons.
- This treasuring of him above all earthly things and persons is most clearly seen in what you are gladly willing to risk, or to sacrifice in order to enjoy more of him.
You have one life. I don't know about you, but I want my life to display the glory of Christ. I want to be able to say with Paul, "To live is Christ and to die is gain." I want my life to be filled with Christ and to spill out Christ to others.
So as I continue to pray for this dear member of our church family, I'm reminded that it's only by grace that you and I are alive today. Only by his sheer grace. And so with this one life, let us ask ourselves the question: Will I honor Jesus Christ and point others to him today?
